A simple way to read the Bible – and learn from it.

Reading the Bible regularly is the absolute best way to discover how to follow Jesus. It’s the primary way He speaks to us. It will bring you hope, encouragement, guidance, and practical advice on the every day issues you’re facing. The Bible is relevant to everyone, everywhere, at any time.

But does the Bible make sense in our modern world? How can you read it so that you can understand and grow from it?

Here’s a simple way.

Think of it like this.

Just like showering and washing with soap gives you a fresh approach to your day, spending a few minutes reading the Bible regularly with the SOAP method will help give you a fresh understanding and approach to your life!

Here’s how it works.

S – Scripture
O – Observation
A – Application
P – Prayer

Scripture: First, grab a journal and start by writing down a Scripture verse, or a portion of one, that sticks out to you. Maybe you are reading through a book of the Bible, and are doing a chapter each day. Perhaps you are following a reading plan that interests you. The Bible App makes this very simple.

Observation: Next, think about and write down a few thoughts about what you see in the verses that you’re reading – What did it mean there and then? Who was the audience? Why was it written? What was the context? Are there any words or phrases that stand out?

Application: After that, bring it to the here and now. This is when God’s Word becomes personal and practical. What is God saying to me today? Write down a few things. How can I apply what I just read to my own personal life? What changes do I need to make? Is there an action that I need to take?

Prayer: Lastly, this is your chance to respond to God’s Word with your own words. Be honest with God about what you are feeling and thinking. If He has revealed something to you during your study, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! Then, write it down.

If you’d like an example, here’s a cute kindergartner showing you that anyone can SOAP!
